Inspiration: Choosing Wedding Flowers

Inspiration: Choosing Wedding Flowers

Flowers!  Everyone loves them and they are often an integral part of your wedding and budget.  Flower centerpieces are the magical touch that pulls an entire wedding together. Whether you choose to have grand, five-foot arrangements or small mason jar centerpieces, flowers will make all the difference. Here are some inspiring ideas to help you choose beautiful flowers for your wedding and budget.

  1. There is no wrong or right choice

Aside from making sure that the flowers you choose complement or match your color scheme, any flower will be a win! Flowers are a versatile decoration and with so many different kinds, varieties, colors and styles, there are plenty to choose from. Choosing flowers can be plenty of fun as a DIY project, but if you feel like this might overwhelm you, visit a local florist and ask for guidance.

  1. Get inspired by looking

Feel free to browse through bridal magazines and wedding blogs for inspiration. Also, by simply conducting a Google search, you will find hundreds of options and ideas. Be sure to bookmark your favorite ones or print the pages so that you can have a visual on hand when purchasing from or consulting with a florist. Another way to find ideas is to ask your wedding venue for pictures of previous weddings at their facilities. By doing this, you will get an idea of what styles and arrangement sizes look better in the venue. Inspiration from other sources is very important since it can help you gain perspective, add creativity, and increase your number of options.

  1. Keep your color scheme in mind

The last thing you would want to do is overwhelm your venue with decorations of one single color. Keep to a color scheme rather than a particular color, and most importantly, remember to complement colors throughout the entire process of planning. Consider your bridesmaids’ dress color, tablecloths, napkins, cake, and lighting when deciding on flowers. This is important because it will prevent you from using one single hue repeatedly in a distasteful manner. Some of the most commonly used wedding flowers are:

  • White: rose, sweet pea, camellia, and snowdrop.
  • Pink: rose, peony, sweet pea, carnation, and lily.
  • Yellowdaffodil, sunflower, and tulip.
  • Redgerbera, rose, dahlia, and poinsettia.

  1. Finally, consider the season

Different flowers are in season for fall, spring, summer and winter. Keep in mind that if you choose flowers out of season, it may hurt your budget because they will be harder to find. Usually, finding an alternative (to an out-of-season flower) is not difficult due to the variety of flowers available, so don’t panic since you can find a substitute that is just as beautiful. Here are some flowers categorized by season to kick off your floral arrangement planning:

  • Spring flowers: daffodil, freesia, gerbera, orchid, and sweet pea.
  • Summer flowers: carnation, lily, magnolia, peony, rose, and sunflower.
  • Autumn/fall flowers: daisy, hydrangea, passionflower, and pinks.
  • Winter flowers: camellia, poinsettia, snowdrop, and tulip.

Lastly, remember that flowers are a personal choice and should be one of the finishing touches to your wedding decorations. Choose flowers that complement your wedding style and fall within your color scheme. For starting inspiration, check out photos from past events at the Roof Garden, here. Happy flower choosing!
