When we think of winter, we think of dazzling white with splashes of color on rosy cheeks and pink lips coaxed by the chill, but winter offers a lovely background for a romantic wedding. Winter brings to mind horse drawn sleighs as white as the alabaster look of the season. Cuddle in a fur or imitation fur stole, bolero or jacket (another idea is a beautiful capelet) and let the weather give its own special contribution to your day. Winter can provide a sparkling backdrop—or a mild day here in the south of Texas.
Speaking of horse drawn transportation, it is very romantic—and handy (no one gets lost)—if you provide your guests with their own carriage to arrive at the ceremony and/or the reception.
A winter wedding can also reduce costs, as venues aren’t as booked nor are the vendors who supply the atmosphere and accoutrements for the celebration.
Planning a winter wedding may prove to be a bit less stressful as you’re not a party to the spring rush of ceremonies. You can make your wedding stand out with your wintertime choice of venue and color palette to brighten up a cool, dazzling day.
Oh! The Decorations!
So, let’s think about planning this winter wedding, shall we? A few ideas to contemplate as you make your seasonal selection. Temperatures may be dropping, but you hear your wedding bells ringing.
One adventure would be icy branches and pale gray chairs for a truly wintry wonderland. This can be carried forward with darker gray bridesmaid’s dresses relieved by the bride’s colorful bouquet. Or carry white roses tied with gray ribbon. Have your ring bearer carry a floral pillow as light as snow. Or defy the rules and don’t be bound by winter whites, greens, and reds—experiment with other seasonal or trendy colors!
Imagine a ceremony in front of a cozy stone fireplace in a rustic setting of polished wood floors and wood-scented walls. You can go elegant or keep with the atmosphere of the venue. It may be cold outside, but everyone inside is toasty warm.
Adorn your chairs with holiday inspired covers.
What To Serve!
Serve champagne and spiced drinks in a Wassail bowl. Or both!
Who wouldn’t love a white floral chuppah with crystals dripping like ice crystals?
Are your bridesmaids dressed in style? Why not choose a strapless dress instead of a long-sleeved gown—or silk charmeuse over double-faced satin. Whatever works for you, their sensitivity to cooler temperatures and your own sense of style. Run with it! But beware that coats might be necessary in the dash into the outside world and pretty pashminas might not suffice. It might be a bit much to ask your bridesmaids to provide their own wraps so plan for it in your budget.
A winter reception with the sun setting early can be made comfy and inviting. Candles offer a subtle glow and velvet tied napkins bring in lush textures. Caution here, don’t allow the reception area or the area where the ceremony will be held to get too hot.
Winter wedding cakes—yummy! Choosing a wedding cake that tastes like the season enhances the mood. Again, make color count! A palette of whites, icy blues, and deep reds or rustic greens mixed with brown shout Winter. If you ask your baker, chances are you can have sugar versions of the flowers in your bridal bouquet. Or consider a white cake with silver snowflakes. Serving cake with black walnut ice cream is a treat, or starlight mints on each plate for added color.
