Do’s and Don’ts of Planning a Bridal Shower

So you want to throw the perfect bridal shower? Don’t know where to begin? Wishing you could find a Bridal Shower App on the web? Even if you are the seasoned hostess, this information can come in handy. Easily host a party for someone you love, beginning now:

Checklist.

Needless to say, this should be your first big To Do. Your Checklist is a roadmap for your trip. (Note: You rarely need to consult your odometer on this fun expedition) Here is a good app for a checklist from Real Simple. Showers should be held between 2 weeks and 2 months prior to the wedding; the earlier the better. Don’t forget to ask the Guest of Honor and other important guests about their availability.

Choose Theme.

Are you thinking of an exciting group activity like skydiving? Oh dear, the Guest of Honor is afraid of heights. Before you plan your bridal shower entertainment, check with the bride to see if she is comfortable with having a martial arts instructor give a hands-on demonstration. The theme can be carried through on many levels from decorations to food and that really cool juggler.

A few popular themes:

Breakfast at Tiffany’s – Champagne, elegant hors d’oeuvres, classy decorations and/or a graceful sit-down meal. Entertainment: A classical harpist or guitarist (many don’t have a piano readily available), or a jazz keyboardist. A photo booth or photographer can capture your friends in their finery. Attire: Dressy

Strawberry Garden – Wear pink dresses and red heels!   Give the bride a bouquet of fresh flowers in strawberry colors. A perfect opportunity to show off your new garden or sunroom. Don’t forget the strawberry mojitos and strawberry cake.

Western – You can take the girl out of the country, but you can’t take the country out of the girl. Hats & boots. Country music. Line dancing or two-step anyone?

Vintage Pool Party – Everyone loves a 60s-inspired tiki party. Decorate with bold and bright colors, wear your swimsuit or sundress, and have the best pool party in the history of summer.

Travel Theme – If your bride is a jet setter, collect vintage globes and suitcases, books and cameras to add a special touch. Postcards of her destinations are great.

Rustic Vintage, Steampunk Marie Antoinette, Great Gatsby, Slumber Party, Flamingos, Theater…your imagination is the limit!

Guest List.

Ask the bride for her guest list, and don’t invite anyone to your Bridal Shower that isn’t invited to the wedding. This way, the occasion for hurt feelings won’t arise. This list may also give you some idea who to ask for assistance at the shower and in the planning stage.

Gift Guidelines.

You may give your guests guidelines for purchasing gifts. Include the couple’s registry information, but tell invitees strict adherence to the theme or registry isn’t a requirement. They can let their imaginations be the limit.

Don’t plan gifts that are high on the embarrassment barometer and do consider the guest list culture. The bride (and others) may be red-faced at some well thought out but risqué gifts. This is not a good time to indulge your rowdy side unless the bride is free-spirited and wants a sex toy party. Price? $30-$50 is reasonable.

Invitations.

Even today, there’s something about opening a paper invitation. This indulgence of tradition is a statement of your style. You don’t need to spend half of your budget on paper. Many online vendors offer reasonable choices and some even provide print-it-yourself templates.

The final to-do is to enjoy your own handiwork, the perfect bridal shower, especially knowing your friend is having a great time.
