Choosing a wedding cake is one of the most fun things to do when planning a wedding. We are talking sugar and frosting here! Be sure not to get too caught up in the sweetness, however, and follow the next 5 tips to choosing the best cake for your big day.
1. Choose your design
You’ve fantasized long enough about your wedding cake and now the day is here! Browse through magazines, wedding blogs and the Internet to find photos that match your idea. By doing this, you can point your baker toward a focused direction and avoid communication problems. There are plenty of images on the web, however, if you do not find one that reflects your particular style, then feel free to draw up your designs. It’s your cake, anyway!
2. Ask Around
Be sure to ask relatives, friends, and your wedding venue for any bakery recommendations. Also, message your married friends and ask them about their cake, the customer service, and most importantly, the taste! Don’t be shy in asking, and use your resources to your advantage.
3. Give Yourself Enough Time
Start planning your design concept 5-6 months in advance. It’s always nice to have a binder or notebook with photos so that you can share and remember your ideas easily. You should be ready to place an official order 4-5 months before your wedding. Bakers are busy and so are you, so make good use of your time.
4. Try Before You Buy
Feel free to ask caterers and bakers for a cake tasting appointment. This is ultimately the best way to choose a cake. In the end, taste says it all. If you don’t want to spend time visiting every baker in town, then use your recommendations from earlier and only make appointments with 2-4 vendors. At this meeting, be sure to ask them about delivery, set up and cake cutting services.
5. 2014 Wedding Cake Trends
The following are cake industry trends that will take over during 2014’s wedding season. Pay close attention!
- The simple naked cake: The design of this cake features several layers of buttercream icing and fruit between the layers. It has a very rustic look to it and there is no icing to cover the outside of the cake.
- Ombre-colored cake: This particular cake is decorated with graded hues of a single color icing. It’s going to be a hit.
- Tall Cake Toppers: Whether it be long candles, sparklers, or an eye-catching display of flowers, cake toppers are going to be huge this 2014, literally. How will you top your cake?
Lastly, be sure to provide your cake designer or baker with as much information possible. Share the color of your dress, decorations, and flowers, and try to bring color swatches to compare colors on-site. This will make you confident in your decision and will help the baker give you even more tips and guidance.
