Autumn Leaves – Planning a Seasonal Fall Wedding

Autumn leaves drift by my window…autumn leaves of red and gold…

This quote is from the wonderful song Autumn Leaves which was popular in the 1940s but has survived as a favorite today. We start this post with the quote because the rich colors of autumn with the beauty of those falling leaves seemed singularly appropriate for planning a wedding in tune with autumn.

If you’ve decided on a fall wedding, you have a wonderful color palette from which to choose. Not surprisingly, autumn is one of the most popular times of year for weddings.

You have the fall colors to inspire your wedding color palette of burnt orange, brown, yellow, and red. But you could use the chic shades of plum and aubergine along with cream and blush. A classic navy blue can be paired with a glamorous shade of gold. For a brown palette think of lovely mocha or cappuccino instead of the more commonly used chocolate. This color scheme combines very well with black, cream, and red. Purple accented with contrasting flowers is perfect for a colorful fall wedding.

For that perfect fall bridesmaid look, one recommendation is light gold dresses embellished with mango or fuchsia sashes. Flowers in these same colors are a wonderful addition, or a way to bring in the colors without wearing them. Other colors to consider are deep green (but not too deep), rust, and as mentioned above, aubergine. A beautiful white bridal gown combined with vibrant purple bridesmaids’ dresses is perfect for the season. Since the weather can be cool, give your bridesmaids a color-coordinated pashmina to keep them warm and smiling.

With cakes for a fall wedding, you can be innovative and inspired by the season. Rather than a traditional white cake, be different and make your autumn statement with:

  • pumpkin cake with cream cheese frosting
  • spice cake with blackberry filling and cream cheese frosting
  • chocolate cake with molded chocolate acorns or leaves
  • On the lighter side, an almond lemon cake with lemon frosting and filling

Your guests will remember these cakes and know, if you choose one of them, it was definitely an autumn testimonial. If you prefer a delicious white cake, ask your baker to drape one side in edible flowers in the shades in your bouquet or in keeping with your wedding theme and colors. The cake can also be adorned by adding chocolate, sugar, or gum paste leaves, acorns, and other fall-inspirations.

Fall can encourage all kinds of unique wedding favors. Caramel apples individually packaged and tied with a ribbon are memorable. Soy candles in burnt orange, yellow or brown capture the coziness of the season. Small bottles of maple syrup are a great and useful gift for your guests. They can be included in farewell bags to enjoy later. Pumpkin spice soaps are a useable and pretty favor your guests will remember, especially you and your wedding day. Small jars of apple butter are a tasty representation of the season as well.

For the flower girls, do something different! Let them carry pumpkins adorned with flowers down the aisle. If your color scheme permits orange, ring bearers look handsome in gray suits and sporting orange ties.

White roses accented with crimson are a beautiful fall combination. Add gold leaves and greenery—you have your fall themed bouquet. A rustic bouquet including garden roses and fiddle fern shouts fall in certain terms. A bright bouquet in rich hues ties in the autumnal feel. Try a vibrant blend of flowers which includes orange, yellow, and white.

You can go bold in the fall or your choice may be a classic traditional wedding, which, of course, is always elegant and chic. However, autumn offers so many chances to make a warm but exciting statement of your personality and taste. Hear, Hear for autumn weddings!
